His artwork includes dramatic black and white pencil drawings, delicately hued Western paintings, and whimsical musical scenes, all of which reflect and express his own life experiences. From his earliest sketches to his current paintings, he records both the poignantly mundane and sublimely humorous scenes that represent the richness of ranch life in America. 

Growing up on ranches in Arizona, Stephens spent most of his spare time drawing what life presented him. He has an innate ability to view things more closely than others, and being surrounded by a variety of animals and wildlife allowed him to store details about anatomy that were more accurate than any information obtained from books. He also draws inspiration from his experiences with music and playing piano at his local church as a child. These playful pieces allow him to unwind from the tightness of realism. Although his unique imagery covers many subjects, from Native Americans and cowboys to domestic animals and wildlife, he prefers to portray only what he knows from first-hand experience. He sells originals and prints of his works on a variety of mediums. Plaintiff also teaches various workshops and classes around the United States.
